Castles and Fortresses in Albania
Situated south of Tirana, Berat is Albania’s most beautiful city; lying in a picturesque setting on the banks of the Osum River, it is ringed by the Tomorr and Shpirag Mountains. Gjirokastër nestles on three hill-sides in the valley of the Drino River, in southern Albania. Second only to Berat in terms of the number of its important historic monuments, it is the country’s most popular tourist destination. Shkodër is a favourite target for Montenegrin day-trippers, as it serves as a junction for those aiming for the Albanian Alps, and as a base for excursions to the nearby Lake Shkodër. The town of Kruja is located about 40 km north of Tirana. The remnants of the castle stand on the hilltop above the town; some parts of the castle are restored and it houses the Skanderbeg Museum. The town of Elbasan is located in the eastern part of Albania, about 50 km southeast of Tirana. Visitors often pass through the town on the way of the shores of Lake Ohrid.
