Hochosterwitz Castle

Hochosterwitz Castle is located in the southern part of Austria, in Carinthia region, east of the town of Sankt Veit an der Glan and northeast direction from the city of Klagenfurt. The castle is situated on the top of a 160 m high dolomite rock and it is one of the main landmarks of Carinthia region.

Hochosterwitz Castle is one of the most impressive medieval castles in Austria; it is often regarded as the model of a medieval castle due to its location and structure. To access the castle you must go through 14 defensive gates, which protected the way up to the castle for centuries. The castle received its present shape at the end of the 16th century.

From the first gate there is a lift up to the castle. The castle museum has a collection of weaponry, art objects and amours.
