Sofia
One of Europe’s oldest cities - founded some 7000 years ago – Sofia is located on the edge of the Sofia Basin, at the foot of the Vitosha Range. The city acquired its name from the 6th century Church of St. Sofia. Sofia’s main tourist attractions are generally concentrated in a narrow section of the inner city, which can be comfortably traversed on foot.
The city’s historic monuments faithfully reflect the mixture of Roman, Turkish, Byzantine and Bulgarian cultures to which it was exposed over the hundreds of years.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia Of the monuments dating from the Roman period, the most widely known one is the Saint George Church. The Banya Bashi Mosque, built in the 16th century, is a reminder of the period of Ottoman rule. Sofia’s most famous attraction is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral built in the early 20th century.
 Central Mosque, Sofia
Situated not far from the city, the Boyana Church, which is one of the best preserved medieval buildings, has been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Vitosha Range, to the south of Sofia, is a favourite hiking area in summer and a popular ski resort in winter. Rotunda of St. George Church, Sofia

Popular destinations in BulgariaAlso known as the “Maritime Capital”, Varna, with its beaches, sights and programmes, is one of the favourite holiday resorts on the Black Sea. Many tourists are attracted by the new resorts established nearby, such as Albena, and the zone of development known as “Golden Sands”. One of (if not) the most beautiful cities in Bulgaria, Veliko Tarnovo - situated approximately midway between Sofia and Varna - forms a picturesque setting on the hilltops, within a bend of the Jantra River. Nessebar town is one of the major cultural heritage destinations along the Bulgarian Black Sea coastline. Its Old Town was placed on UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. Beside the cultural attractions, Nessebar is also a popular sea resort, attracting holidaymakers and tourists with its two beaches, near the new town. The old part of Plovdiv, with its winding, cobble-stone streets, is best explored by roaming around it on foot. Its decorative 18th-19th century buildings bear the stamp of a typically Balkan style of architecture; mostly renovated, some function as museums or galleries. Sozopol is situated on a small picturesque rocky peninsula on the Black Sea, in the southern part of the Burgas Bay, 30 km south of Burgas. Sozopol is a very popular sea resort, in the town there are two long sandy beaches: the Central beach and the Harmani beach. Burgas is considered to be the centre of the southern section of Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, and is its number one harbour. Although its historic and cultural sights cannot compete with those of its rival, Varna, being less crowded in the summer months, with its cafés and restaurants it can offer a pleasant venue for switching-off. Located in the northwestern Rila Mountains, about 120 km south of Sofia, Rila Monastery is the largest and most known Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. Rila Monastery was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Lying at an altitude of 1,008–2,914 m, Pirin National Park has a limestone Balkan landscape, with lakes, waterfalls, caves and pine forests. All glacial forms of the relief are situated within the borders of Pirin National Park. |
