Rijeka
Rijeka, situated in the northern corner of Kvarner Bay, is Croatia’s third-largest city and the most important port along the Adriatic coast. Rijeka enjoyed its golden age during the Austro-Hungarian Empire when it was developed as the Empire’s principal port. The city’s main attractions are located within a relatively small area. Its Empire and Secessionist style buildings, common to the Monarchy, evoke the atmosphere of Vienna or Budapest. Rijeka, Old Town The seaside, the palm-trees, the esplanade starting from the harbour and the long promenade following the course of the one-time city-wall, lend a Mediterranean atmosphere to the city. Although its harbour facilities make Rijeka unsuitable for sea-side bathing, the smaller nearby swimming resorts can be recommended. If you travel to Rijeka you might visit other destinations in Istria such as Pula, Rovinj or Porec.
