Konopiště
Located 50 km southeast of Prague, Konopiště château is one of the most beautiful châteaux in Bohemia. Konopiště was founded as an early gothic fortress after French castles in the 13th century, and it was later rebuilt in the Renaissance and Baroque style. In the 19th century it was reconstructed in the Romantic style and transformed into a luxurious château.
The castle was the home of the successor to the Habsburg throne, Ferdinand , whose assassination in Sarajevo in 1914 served as a pretext to the outburst of the World War I. The château museum offers a fine display of furniture, sculptures, paintings and a collection of medieval weapons and hunting trophies.
