Ipolytarnóc
Located in the northern part of Hungary, close to the Slovakian border, about 25 km west of Salgótarján, the small village of Ipolytarnóc is famous for its Fossils Nature Conservation Area. Thanks to a volcano, which erupted about 20 million years ago, the original morphology of the land surface and fossils of its original vegetation and animals were conserved. Ipolytarnoc- Fossils Nature Conservation Area Beside fossilized pine trees, shark teeth, leaf imprints etc; there are about 1200 footprints from 22 million years ago. The 9 meter long fossilized piece of a 23 million year-old pine tree merits also a special attention. The fossils of Ipolytarnóc are on UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
