Cēsis Situated in the heart of Vidzeme upland, Cēsis old town with its famous castle is one of the prettiest Latvian towns. Cēsis Castle, dominating the town center, was built by the Livonan Order in the beginning of the 13th century. The Gothic castle was the residence of the Livonan Order almost for three centuries. St John’s church was built at the end of the 13th century, when it was the largest church in Vidzeme region. Inside the church there can be found the gravestones of the masters of the Livonian Order. The Old Town’s cobblestoned roads and alleys retain their original medieval plan of the town and are lined by old buildings with traditional red tiled roofs and pretty facades.
