Poiana Brasov Ski Resort

Located in the stunning Carpathian Mountains, Poiana Brasov is one of the top ski resorts in Romania.

First designed as a winter ski resort in 1906, Poiana Brasov has become a modern ski resort that is popular with skiers. It’s situated at the foot of Mount Postavaru, in the Carpathian Mountains, and close to the medieval town of Brasov. The resort has an altitude of 1021m and there are a total of 14km of pistes and ski trails to explore.

This is an ideal ski resort to try if you’re a beginner, want to try skiing with your family or are on a budget. It’s not quite up to the skiing standards of countries such as Austria and Switzerland, but it has its own unique charms. One of the elements that appeals most is the fact that it’s very affordable and offers a chance for new skiers to try out skiing without spending a fortune on a trip.

There are about six or seven ski schools operating in Poiana Brasov and they cater for all abilities, plus children. The mountain itself has slopes geared up for beginners and intermediates and the scenery offers a fantastic location for skiing in. As far as accommodation goes, there are several hotels to choose from, as well as chalets, and a selection of restaurants and bars. The nightlife here isn’t as busy or renowned as places like Switzerland, but that factor can work to its advantage.

The nearest airport is Bucharest, which is located about two hours away. However, a new international airport is scheduled to open in 2008 near the city of Brasov, so that will undoubtedly have a positive effect on the ski resort, improve accessibility and cut travelling time for visitors.
