Orava Castle

One of the greatest tourist attractions of the region is the Orava Castle (German: Arwaburg, Hungarian: Árva). Overlooking the town of Oravsky Podzamok, it is situated in northwest Slovakia. The medieval fortress stands on a steep rocky limestone cliff rising almost vertically for 112 metres above the Orava River.

The castle was built from the middle of the 13^th century to the beginning of the 17^th century, but the main construction work was began in the mid of the 16^th century by the Thurzo family. It took on its present appearance at the turn of the 19^th and 20^th centuries, when Count József Pálffy had it reconstructed in a romantic style. 

The castle presently functions as a museum; its exhibitions show the history of the castle and the Orava region.
