Šomoška Castle
The picturesque gothic castle of Šomoška (Hungarian: Somoskő) is located on the Slovak-Hungarian border, between Salgótarján and Fiľakovo. The castle ruins stand on Slovak territory, the village belongs to Hungary. The castle was built out of basaltic columns on a volcanic rock in the 13th century. There is a great view from the castle. Its surroundings form a significant archeological locality and beneath the castle there is a natural formation, which is unique in Central-Europe – a stone waterfall of basaltic flows.
