Triglav National Park
Triglav National Park is Slovenia’s only national park and is one of the largest natural parks in Europe. The park lies in the vicinity of high stony mountains including Mount Triglav (2864 m); the highest mountain of Slovenia - and deep river gorges, highland karst potholes and friendly highlands. The park reached its present size in 1981, includes practically all of the Julian Alps that lie in Slovenia, and covers 83,807 hectares. The highest point in the park is the peak of Mount Triglav (2,864 m), from which the park takes its name, and the lowest point is in the Tolminska Chutes (180 m). Mountains, rivers and lakes, forests, and mountain pastures and meadows are interwoven with a rich cultural heritage. It protects many endemic animal and plant species (living in the park, among unique plant species there are chamois, mountain sheep, wild roosters, grouse, eagles and marmots) and the tradition of the hard life of alpine dairymen and mountaineers.
