The Samaria Gorge is located in the National park of Samaria, in the White Mountains in the western part of Crete, Greece. Samaria Gorge national park is one of the major tourist attractions of the island. The gorge was created by a small river running between the White Mountains and Mt. Volakias. The gorge became a national park in 1962. Local tourist operators provide organized tours to the Gorge. Visits to the National park are allowed from May 1 to October 15.
