Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is one of the most beautiful cities – not just of Eastern Europe, but of the whole continent. Situated on the banks of the Vltava River, it is visited by millions of people every year.

Often referred to as “Golden Prague”, it was given this name following the gilding of the towers of Prague Castle (the Hradcin), by the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV.

For several centuries, Prague was also known as “The City of a Hundred Towers”; its towers, domes and spires – of which there are still some 500 – define the silhouette of the city.

The historic core of the city was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1962; it is one of the most significant complexes of historic monuments in Czech Republic.

Its colourful, narrow winding streets are lined by wonderful medieval and baroque style buildings – practically every architectural style can be found in the city.

Prague’s pre-eminent tourist attractions are the wonderful gothic style St. Vitus Cathedral; the “Charles” Bridge spanning the Vltava River; the old-city square with the Town Hall and its famous clock – the “Orloj”; and the monuments of the former Jewish Quarter.
