Halki is found 90 minutes from Skala on Rhodes, Halki is a charming, pretty and welcoming island and despite being an empty and barren island without any beaches and missing its own supply of fresh water it is still extremely popular with tourists because of its savage beauty. In Emborio, the main town and harbour, there are loads of waterfront bars and a broad selection of hostels and hotels which are dotted throughout its restored neo classical properties, although they do get booked up a long time in advance. Agios Nikolaos offers the tallest belfry across the Dodecanese Islands, with an equally impressive free standing tower and clock tower nearby.

The island has just one white sandy beach down in Pondamos Bay and if you wander from there up to Horio village you’ll find an old and deserted village that has been empty since around 1950 and which offers stunning views out from its fortress. From there, take a stroll along Tarpon Springs Boulevard which will bring you out to the Monastery of Agios Ioannis which is beautiful and has an impressive courtyard with an ancient tree in the center and cells in which you can spend the night. In addition you can take boats around the island to reach the bits you can’t get to by road, like Dyo Giali on the north shore and Areta pebble cove as well as Trahia under the castle.
