San Jose Airport Information

Despite the fact that the San Jose International Airport (SJC) is located in the most populous city in the Bay Area, it (the airport) remains the smallest of the three major Bay Area airports. The San Jose International moves less than a third as many passengers as the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and fewer passengers than the Oakland Airport.
Like the Oakland Airport, the San Jose Airport is used often only by residents who find SFO to be too inconveniently out of the way. However, the city of San Jose is looking to change the status of SJC via huge expansion project due for completion in the next couple of years.
The creation of the San Jose Airport dates back to 1939, when local grocer and future mayor Ernie Renzel bought the Stockton Ranch with the purpose of building an airport there. It took many more years for the city to approve of the building of a municipal airport, however. In the meantime, in 1945, a test pilot named James Nissen leased a part of the Stockton Ranch land and built a runway and hangar for his own private flight school. When the city finally approved of the airport construction, Nissen sold back his lease and worked with Renzel to plan and develop the airport project. The first terminal was completed in 1965.
Today, the new expansion plan for SJC includes new San Jose Airport parking structures and a bigger and more modern architectural design. The first expansion plan, made in 2004, required a $3 billion budget and included the construction of a VTA light rail and a new BART station connecting directly to the airport, as well as a consolidated terminal with 40 separate gates. The plan was later revised, however. The new plan, developed in 2005, is scaled down and has a budget of $1.3 billion. A brand new North Concourse, part of the expansion plan, will be completed in 2010. More check-in counters and security points are also planned. The sail design of the new airport was created by Gensler and the Steinberg Group.
