Constructed like a hillside village adjacent to the town of Lagos, the nine-building hotel includes gardens, archways, and terra-cotta tile paths and stairways. The design creates a small-hotel ambience in each building, heightened by many tucked-away, air-conditioned sitting areas with banquettes of either white leather or orange fabric. Two areas contain fireplaces for winter comfort.
Amenity highlights: A central courtyard contains a large pool and a 4-by-5-meter (12-by-15-foot) children’s pool surrounded by a sundeck. A solarium houses a 12-meter (40-foot-long) heated pool and four-person spa tub. Served by complimentary shuttle bus, the hotel’s beach club two km (1.2 miles) away on a seven-km (four-mile) beach (Meia Praia) comprises a series of thatched-roof buildings, including an open-air restaurant/bar, facing a 14-meter (45-foot-diameter) pool.
Insider tip: The sheer cliffs of Europe’s southwestern-most point, between the village of Sagres and Cape St. Vincent, from where Prince Henry the Navigator planned Portugal’s world exploration, lie 24 km (15 miles) west of Lagos.
