Istria has recognized the potential of enrichening its tourist offer with cycling for tourists, which is becoming more and more popular throughout the world. In comparison to other parts of Croatia, Istria is the dominant region concerning this type of tourism and has around 40, mostly off-road, trails at its disposal, along which some 20 races, including international ones that are held every year.
As a result, the 50th edition of the international junior stage race Kroz Istra (Through Istria) and the 13th marathon cycling race Istra MTB Tartufi Tour – Parenzana, one of the most significant mountain bike races in this part of Europe, have been held here.
The existing trails are constantly being improved, new ones are being prepared and soon all the trails will have unified signs. A bike-park is being set up in Pazin and it should be finished by the end of this year and the construction of standardized cycling maps is also planned, as well as brochures that will present the Istrian offer to all cycling fans at the tourist fairs which are to be held next year. Istria has 14 licensed cycling tourist guides and more are expected since another course should soon take place.
The intensive promotion of cycling tourism has recently brought ten recreational cyclists from the USA and Canada to Istria on a tour organized by an American tourist agency (Sacred Rides). Recreational cycling fans from North America have been on a tour of the Pazin and Buzet cycling trails, which pass through some of the most beautiful locations in central Istria, such as Zarečki krov, Hum, Roč and Kotle.
Recreational cyclists who came here with other specialized tourist agencies from abroad, such as the Italian Prokulus Reisen agency, have also tried out the Istrian cycling trails during the summer.
Recreational cyclists, who will learn about the local eno-gastronomic offer as well as the Istrian landscape, have around 30 Bike&Bed accommodation facilities at their disposal, in private houses, small boutique hotels and bike hotels. Cycling fans can enjoy the Wine Bike Marathon in Momjan, which will be held in November this year in the period around St. Martin’s Day (Martinje) and the christening of the must, which certainly guarantees a great time.
