Ciudad Nezahualcoyotl is commonly known as Ciudad Neza. It is the third largest city in Mexico, and is located to the north east corner of the Federal District of Mexico and is located within the Mexico City Metropolitan Area. The city was named in honor of Nezahualcoyotl, a King and Acolhua Poet from Texcoco. The town was constructed on the drained Lake Texcoco bed.
Nezahualcoyotl has quite a number of buildings having a contemporary form of design, such as the Alfred del Mazo Velez Auditorium, the Casa de Cultura and others. The Municipal Palace has monuments in its front, built in honor of Nezahualcoyotl, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and Cuauhtemoc. These are located at the Plaza Unión de Fuerzas.
The Cathedral of Jesus of the Divine Mercy (Jesús Señor de la Divina Misericordia) is more commonly referred to as the Cathedral of Nezahualcoyotl. The Cathedral has a chapel adjoining it, as well as altarpieces in the exterior that houses the Lord’s Prayer in six languages Nahuatl, Hebrew, Aramaic, Latin, Spanish, and Greek. There is also an atrium and a bookstore here.
The Cultural Center Jaime Torres Bodet or the Centro Cultural “Jaime Torres Bodet” is the main center for culture in the city. The cultural center is home to the Bodet Library, with the Center for Information and Documentation of Nezahualcóyotl (Centro de Información y Documentación), which has a large collection of photographic, cartographic, legal, historical and other information on the Nezahuacoyotl. There is the Jose Martin Cultural Center, which houses the Hortus Gallery, the first gallery of contermporary art in Nezahualcoyotl, as well as the José Guadalupe Posadas gallery.
The Neza 86 stadium, or the Jose Lopez Portillo (its less popular original name). The name Neza 86 fell when it was re inaugurated for the FIFA World Cup of 1986, under the symbol Mexico 86. The stadium has 28, 000 people and is part of the Universidad Tecnológica de Nezahualcoyotl (UTN). There are a number of soccer associations here such as the Toros Neza, the Osos Grises and the Coyotes Neza. Atlante FC, professional football team has its home base here.
The Parque del Pueblo (People’s Park is an eight and a half hectare area. There is a man made lake, a train and zoo. The park was inaugurated in 1975. The zoo here has two hundred and sixty animals from fifty seven species. Thirty one species out of this is under danger of extinction. There are successful breedings done of coyotes, bison, llamas, Bengal tigers, white tailed deer and more. The park has twenty thousand visitors in one year. Entry is only 5 pesos.
